One hundred and sixty years after the annexation of Nice to France, the Jules Chéret Fine Arts Museum looks back at the history of its creation, which is closely linked to this historic event.
When Napoleon III visited the city in 1860, artistic activity was still based on private initiatives. There was no large-scale museum establishment to structure the collections and events. The Empire then implemented a proactive policy, marked by benevolence towards the newly attached territories. Very quickly, the Fine Arts Museum project was supported by personalities whose diverse origins, activities and political positions fuelled a fascinating debate mixing aesthetic and social dimensions with questions of identity and territorial claims. The Jules Chéret Museum of Fine Arts opened its doors to the public in January 1928, almost seventy years after the beginning of this real "battle of the fine arts".
The exhibition offers a journey through this long history, covering the many events and projects that have marked it. A retrospective look, to explain the museum as we know it today, in all its splendour and the eclecticism of its collection.
